Tuesday, November 30

A boy took a teacher and a room full of classmates hostage yesterday in Wisconsin. Read the full story here. Last week we practiced our lock-down drill. We have never had to go into an actual "lock-down," but it is good to have a plan in place. Put yourself in the hostage situation in Wisconsin. What would you do in that particular situation? How would you react? What can be done to ensure this does not happen again? Did you read the comments after the article? The one I found humorous was to arm all the teachers. I can tell you this, if it comes to the point where teachers have to be armed in the classroom, I know one teacher, namely me, who will be retiring.

The end of the semester will be here before you know it. Interim reports are due this week. I will work on getting papers graded and returned to you. I will be grading blog posts on Thursday. Make sure you have responded. In order to receive a "5," you need to answer the blog completely using formal language (capital letters, correct spelling, no abbreviations, complete sentences.)

After you have finished with your blog post, your next podcast assignment is to record an informational podcast. There is a handout with complete instructions on the desk in the front of the room. Help yourself.

i would stay calm and relax and probabily try to leave the school no matter what the teachers said.

In this particular situation it would be best to remain calm. This is how I would first react with a hostage situation. Well for this incident not to occur again it would be first best to know why there was a hostage situation in the first place. What encouraged the student to do so depression, bullied, any of these could contribute. The commment I found the most interesting would have to be "Send all teacher and faculty to gain basic fire arm training."

In this paticular situation i would follow the gunmans rules. I would be terrified but wouldn't show it. What can be done to ensure this doesn't happen again is put security systems in the school. I read the comments and i would have to agree that "strapin em up" wouldn't be a great idea.

This is a horrible thing to happen, it is awful and I wish stuff like this did not happen. I am not sure what school's should do to prvent this from happening again. There are many idea's , but every school doesnt have the budget to put some sort of security system in. Something needs to be done though.

If I was in a hostage situation like the kids on Wisconsin I would try to stay calm and do what he tells me. For this to not happen again they should put metal detectors or have security guards check peoples bags.

11541- This is insane that kid did that. I see the point that one person made about having the teachers have guns, but it's extremely sad that it might come to that thanks to kids like that with a couple screws loose. I say the school should have metal detectors but even that is sad that schools should have to go to that extreme!

If I was in the situation that happened in Wisconsin, I wouldn't know what to do. I would try to stay calm and not say anything. Maybe if teachers reacted with their student and became closer to them, this situation could have been avoided and if councelors took action to talk to all students individually things could be different.

In this situation, I would devise a plan to exploit what appears to be a rather passive "gunman". What I believe to be the most effective plan, allthough rather risky, would be for all of the people being held hostage to charge the gunman at the same time, turning the tide. This would most certainly shock the gunman and not give him time to react to the barrage of people swarming him. The gunman could be wrestled to the ground and the firearm could be either removed or used against the gunman. In answering the question of prevention, I would instill proper gun awareness and bully prevention in the school, which is usually the culprit in most school related shootings/hostage situations. And I found most of the comments on this article well thought out and logical.

12271,
If I was there in that situation i would be scared. I would probably try to hide so I don't get shot. I would probably freak out a lot and not want to be in school and never go again. What could be done is watching the kids with backpacks and bags.

If I was held hostage by a student at my school and the student was armed with a gun, I would probably try to keep myself calm even though it would be very hard to considering the student was armed. I would be very scared. I would try to tell myself that everything would be okay. To make sure something like this wouldnt happen again I would hope that the principle would enforce a policy at the school that would restrict guns or any type of weapon at the school. I read some of the comments at the end of the article and found some of them humorous also.

I have no flipping idea what i would do if i was held hostage i would go crazy.I would try to get on there good side too just like the other students did. I would be so scared. Thank god it hasnt happen to me or any of my other classmates, I dont think anyone knows what its like until it happens to you. I think that the metal dectectors are a great idea if it keeps you and your students safe then thats the best thing. I think all schools around america should have them.

If I was one of the students held hostage at that school, I would listen to the person was armed. I would try and text my mom to let her know what was going on before the person took everyones cell phone. I do not agree with the comments under the post. I believe schools should have metal detectors if the school has a record of viloence.

I think it is great to have a plan in place. I would do what they told me and sit and shut my mouth. I would probebly be shocked but i would fight through it. Put metal detectores in the school to prevent this from happening again.

I would react in a calm relaxive way if there was ever a hostage situation. For this hostage situation i would find out in the first place why it happened so it wouldnt happen again.

If I was in that situation I would most likely not try to pull anything clever. I would be too scared to even talk let alone ask the kid to go to the bathroom. I would suggest that the school gets a metal detector. Things like guns shouldn't be able to just sneak right by you. I think the people who commented saying that the teachers should have guns are ridiculous. Solving a problem about guns with guns defeats the purpose.

If this were to happen to me, I would be dumbfounded. I would think to catch the gunmen off gaurd and take the gun from him. No one can really say what they'd do because it would be hard to judge the impact something like that has on you whem your disgruntled in that manner.

I would of talked to the gunman to see what was going with him. then i would of asked to use bathroom. Then i would of got the cops and took them to the classroom.

If I was in a hostage situation I would most likily try to play a mind game with him to see if I could convice him what he was doing was wrong. If that didn't work I would start to tell the shooter what alot about myself because its scietfic known that there is a less unlikly chance youll get shot. If any of that didn't work the second he turns his back I jump him and hit him with a blont object!

I don't think I would do anything. I would stay calm and relax. I would put in some kind of security system. I don't arming the teachers would be a good idea.

First off I would remain calm and relaxed and not say a word and do what was told. To provint things like this not to happen, MAYBE schools should put a saceridy system in their schools. like when students enter the building they should get checked fully and their bags and everything. Might help out ALOT!

The hostage situations in the past years are crazy to me. But I don't wonder why they do it, honestly. People want to sit back and say kids are crazy these days, but people have no idea. Being bullied and mocked every single day for years is torture. I don't think it's EVER okay to pull out a gun or violence, but I think that schools and administrators should pay more attention to the effects of being bullied. Not only is one effect hostage situations like this, but also many teenage suicides over the years. As for the comments to the article, they are ridiculous. They day that teachers have guns is the day that the world has gone mad. That is just absolutely absurd.
